Subliminal Colors

Josh Mendel, in my opinion, is the finest metal artist to truly mix metal and classical-inspired music nearly flawlessly...... and in a unique style that he can truly call his own. And good lord is this kid ambitious - the song structures and instrumentation are so exacting and progressive, and ridiculously (in a good way) FAST at times that it seems like it's a bit too much, but then our of the blue he shifts it into something that makes the wildness before make total sense - the juxtaposition of the two and how they resolve each other in the end is just so damn unique and impressive. Without question, the most ambitious track is "Absolution", the album's closer: 25 minutes flat of a classically driven, overloaded (again, in a good way) imetal composition that is unrelenting in it's attack and all its twists and turns - it's a journey that is likely the grandest metal song ever written (not necessarily the best, overall) but certainly the most ambitious in its execution. Even though the production could be a bit better at times, Mendel's fantastic debit album that shows a virtuoso at the very start of his series of releases. Bravo.

Dann 'the djentle giant' As I said about Denis Shvarts, Malsteem and Satriani are yesterdays stars. I don't like the coldness and super-ego of mechanical guitar heroes, but guitar heroes such as Mendel and Shvarts must be considered as the future of technical progressive. There is not a bad or tepid song in this album, every mesure is heart-felt and contagious. It's a delight. This LP could make every guitarists jealous of Mendel's talent. Favorite track: Shores.
